Most manufacturers are now willing to build their products to customer specifications. However, it's difficult for them to install and maintain machinery and equipment to do such customization, which can change with almost every new order. In order to concentrate on regular production, production houses now often subcontract these specialized items to other contractors, who have the necessary facilities and resources, to handle them.
This helps resolve the infrastructure & maintenance issues but it gives rise to new problems associated with information flow between the production house and subcontractor.
To maintain a steady flow of information on either side, the production house is compelled to make their SAP system accessible to the subcontractor.
